On May 27, 2008 our father, Jean-Gérard Guillot (“Minet”) passed away at the age of 63.
We would like to offer some words of tribute.
After some years working with his father he left the domaine to widen his wine-making knowledge. He first worked for several years with Domaine de la Chanal in Brouilly, then with Bernard Michelot in Meursault.
In 1978 he returned to Cruzille where he established the Domaine Guillot-Broux with our mother, Jacqueline, starting out with little more than a hectare of vines, but with strong convictions and a propensity for hard work.
By 1991 the application of these qualities had resulted in the expansion of the domaine, and its being awarded official organic certification.
Our father was a winemaker, with a passion for, and an understanding of, all that that encompasses: the earth, the vines, and wine. As a man of the soil, he adored his native Burgundy.
His toil in the vines was relieved by the indulgence of another passion: hunting. Not blind slaughter, but hunting with a deep respect for nature, with the knowledge that man is a part of nature, not apart from it.
When day turned to night he would pursue his fascination with history, on which he read avidly. Listening to him talk about the building of cathedrals, for instance, was a delight and a revelation.
Above all he loved his family, his wife, his children, his grandchildren, to all of whom he communicated his passions and his knowledge.
The creation of wine is a quest, rich in encounters and emotions. It is a passion that requires soul; it cannot be a blind, merciless conquest.
In accordance with his wishes his ashes were scattered in the Perrières, the first parcel of vines that he planted and a perfect resting place for the man he was.
We are paying homage to him with a special cuvée, the Perrières 2007.
